Tips for Editing MOV Files in HitFilm 4 Express

Hi, I record with a Nikon D5200 and have used Windows Movie Maker in the past to edit, which functions, but I'd desperately like to move on from. I'm a noob, as a disclaimer. I downloaded HitFilm 4 Express to give it a whirl but it refused to import my .mov files. Any helps for me to edit MOV in HitFilm 4 Express without hassle?
